AS is a «bare» aluminum wire with a steel core. It refers to the bimetallic bare wires.

Uninsulated steel-aluminum wire of AS brand is intended for the transmission and distribution of electricity in overhead electrical networks. It is used for laying overhead power lines and building high-voltage power transmission lines by tensioning wires between supports. This is the main and the key area of application of this wire.

But it is also used in electrical substations, in street lighting networks and other conditions that do not require insulation of the conductors. A design feature of the AS wire is the steel core. It made it possible to significantly increase the tensile strength of the wire and increase the distance between the supports when laying overhead lines.

AS wire consists of a steel core and aluminum wires stranded around a steel core. The core is made of one or more galvanized steel wires. The conductors are multi-wire aluminum ones without insulation. Therefore, this wire is also called «bare».

Aluminum wires are stranded around the core with the so-called correct twist. The twisting of adjacent layers is made in opposite directions, and the outer or the single layer is necessarily made to the right. This type of twisting protects the wire from unwinding as much as possible. And the whole structure gives the wire strength, since the steel wires bear mechanical stress, and the aluminum wires provide good electrical conductivity.

AS wire is used in air of types I and II, provided that the concentration of the sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere is not more than 150 mg/m2. It is used exclusively on land in all macroclimatic regions. It is suitable for areas with sudden temperature changes and difficult climatic conditions with strong winds, ice-slick and snowfalls. It is efficient within the range from -60°С to +40°С. And in comparison with wire A, it has a greater bearing capacity, due to which it is more resistant to mechanical damage.

Permissible continuous current loads on bare wires depend on the installation location and operating conditions. The long-term permissible heating of the conductors should not exceed +90°C.

The bend radius of the wire during installation is at least 10 maximum wire outer diameters.

The minimum service life is 45 years. The guaranteed service life is 4 years.

AS wire is lightweight, it has high electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and an affordable price. It is resistant to physical influences and has a long service life. And the corrosive film formed during oxidation protects the undamaged sections of the wire from further corrosion. But at the same time, this film also increases the resistance in the damaged part of the conductor, which contributes to the melting of the contacts. It is for this reason that the AS is used to transmit large flows of energy in open areas and in no case is it used indoors.

Applicability scope
